MCSS has published its first newsletter for 2013. In it we have information about the Fall conference scheduled for October 17-18 in Natchez, Mississippi. One page 4 you will find the registration form and on page 5 you will find the call for proposals. Please take time to register early and send in a proposal- the deadline for proposals is June 1.
We also have two professional development articles in the Spring 2013 MCSS Newsletter. The first article is on page 6, it is an article written by Renee McClendon the Co-Director of National History Day- Mississippi. In the article she describes the advantages of incorporating National History Day into social studies instruction. National History Day is a great way to get students directly involved in "doing" history. Thank you Renee for writing the article. National History Day is growing in Mississippi and students are benefiting from their experiences in the program. The second article was written by Dr. Nicole Miller and me. It explains ways we can use primary sources to support implementation of Common Core State Standards.
In my chairman's remarks I highlight some important goals for MCSS this year... the most important being growing membership. If you are not a member please join, if you are a former member, please renew your membership. The next step is to get involved. on page 3, we offer 7 ways that you can get involved in MCSS.
Finally, we have information about the National Council for Social Studies Annual Conference in St. Louis. We encourage everyone to try and attend that conference since it is relatively close to us.
Please read the newsletter, forward it to others, and recruit members for MCSS.
The newsletter can be found on the Mississippi Council for Social Studies Website.
The newsletter will also be sent to the MCSS mailing list.
